Dr. Clara Haneul Yoon is a violinist and lecturer whose work bridges performance, pedagogy, and scholarship, with a focus on how artistic value is shaped within and across different communities. Her research examines the cultural and social frameworks that influence how music is heard, taught, and evaluated, especially within classical traditions.
In 2022, Dr. Yoon launched Saloon Yoon, a lecture‑concert series that re-examines the socio‑spatial conventions of classical concerts on how expectations around silence, attire, and proximity shape listeners’ experience. Presented in venues specifically chosen for their acoustic and spatial character, the series explores how subtle shifts in elements such as lighting, seating, and room design influence the audience’s cognitive and emotional response. Each season invites musicians, writers, and artists of diverse disciplines into conversation, creating listening environments that support calm and sustained attention. Building on her doctoral work at Columbia University on how artistic value is mediated through cultural perception and genre hierarchies, her postdoctoral work extends this inquiry through applied social psychology and environmental design. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master of Music from the Juilliard School and her doctorate from Columbia University.
As an active performer, clinician, and adjudicator, Dr. Yoon’s work spans North America, Europe, and Asia. She has collaborated with institutions including the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, New York University, Columbia University, Princeton University, the University of Toronto, Western University, and the Royal Conservatory of Music, where she works closely with emerging violinists and music educators. Her work has been recognized by the College Music Society, where she served as the 2025 Chair of Music Performance, and by the NAMM Foundation, which awarded her the 2022 President’s Innovation Award for her contributions to broadening access to music education.
Outside her professional work, Dr. Yoon is an avid coffee drinker, Lagree aficionado, and has a particular fondness for trees and mountains. She can often be found exploring Toronto’s newest cafes in search of the perfect roast, planning her next hike, or cooking and attempting to keep her many wilting plants alive with her wonderful husband, Scott.
